Property Description
If you think Ubud is being swallowed up by mini-mall culture and is losing its charisma, rest assured that old, parlour paced Ubud is preserved in an enchanting garden just up from the new post office. Specializing in the type of amenities money can’t buy, the newly refurbished Matahari Cottage Bed and Breakfast, perhaps best described as a boutique homestay, is the oldest on the street. From the moment you walk into the Elizabethan library exuding the scent of amber, you know you are in a different place. Gilded Morocco leather books line the walls. A piano owned by the dog Pal, whose favorite pieces were “Chopin” and “Boogie Woogie” in the forties still sounds in tune and retains the original scratches. The idea that a parlour in which everything is in perfect taste is actually in terrible taste is alive here. Flair over “concepts”; history and over trendiness are the watchwords. The shabby chic overgrown tropical garden boasts a cocoa tree, blue ginger and innumerable other delightful botanicals. Butterflies abound and herons fly above. This is the setting for an experience of Ubud at once exotic and despotic meditative and voluptuous.
Six theme thatched rooms and a thatched jungle bathing pool are situated around the garden. A Chinoiserie garden folly rises like a centerpiece. This is the scene of the Victorian (and Viennese) afternoon tea served from two to five daily. Intensive research has gone into the preparation of the tea and cakes as it would have been enjoyed by Lewis Carroll or Oscar Wilde. Out of the quaint outdoor cottage kitchen all hung with antique copper, an elegantly frivolous procession of silver compotes arrives at the table with towers of Turkish Delight, homemade marshmallows, avocado Bavarian cream and clouds of spun sugar. And don’t forget staples like warm scones, cinnamon toast, shortbread and cucumber sandwiches. Guests’ hands are ceremoniously washed with rosewater from Moroccan pots and the classic leisure pastime unfolds. Travelers from every land meet over tea and the refinement of antique porcelain and silver brings out the best in everyone.
After teatime walk five minutes to down town Ubud or stay at home to get ready for a dance performance with a cooling dip in a jungle side bathhouse or in your own theme cottage.
Indian Pasha is appointed in Art Deco Style. A silver and gold mural, “The Jepun Tree” litters the deep raspberry room with frangipani flowers. A platform bed is strewn with layers of silk and satin silver brocades and decadent pasha pillows dripping down to the floor. Ultra fine Indian erotic art and an Eighteenth century etching of the Court of the grand Moghul imbue the room with a connoisseurs touch.
Next door, the Primitive Room offers guests the experience of a night spent in the middle of the jungle. Perched on the ravine edge, a Balinese mural all in green depicts a tromp l’oeil forest scene opposite the real jungle view through antique batik sliding windows. A splendid mosaic bathroom of white and shiny black pebbles where bathwater spouting from a primitive mask into a deluxe size bathtub combines with contemporary stainless fittings.
The Cinnabar Tearoom preserves the funky Balinese tiles depicting Legong dancers and everyday subjects in relief from the original building. Little does the visitor know from the humble appearance that he is about to enter a miniature Zen Xanadu. Modeled on the golden Samurai tearoom at Osaka Castle, delicate red Chinese calligraphy paper with gold flakes covers the interior. Red lacquer sliding doors with gold lamé reveal secret views and compartments. A Japanned chest contains a collection of Chinese and Japanese cinnabar. An 19th century Geisha woodblock print presides over the traditional flower alcove lighted by a 1920’s Parisian purple silk boudoir lantern. At night, makeup service is provided. The black futon is hidden under a trapped door in the brocaded tatami floor. The bathroom has its own Zen rock garden and hand washing well, a round tub and low shower recalling classic hot springs of northern Japan. This room always appeals to those coming to Ubud as seekers.
The Batavia cottage looks out onto the garden kiosk and Toraja tower. White washed bamboo walls are painted with Delft blue cartouches of offerings of rice, pineapple, and flowers. Colonial furnishings including a brass bed, crystal chandelier, fleur de lys etched windows, and Louis style chairs and settees look exotic against the warm bamboo walls and grass roofs.
Often booked in advance by honeymooners, the Barong cottage was inspired by the Ubud royal bathing springs at Andon. décor is Balinese eclectic. Legong photos were taken by photographer Tim Adams, guest of the cottages over the past eighteen years. The piece de resistance is the alfresco roseate marble bathroom where hot water controlled by marble Jepun flowers gushes into a sunken tub from a moss encrusted laughing Barong. A stone Singa perched on the tower is the separate shower. Silver bowls of bath flowers are placed on pedestals daily as with all deluxe bathrooms at the cottages.
South pacific with nostalgic breezy tropical printed curtains and bedlinens in a no nonsense thatched room brings back memories of Bali Hai. The South Pacific/ The king and I duplex pied a terre is perfect for writers and artists who wish to stay awhile.
Evening comes and the garden is transformed into a fairy playground. A mustachioed butler tiptoes about bringing aroma oils for the guest to mix themselves.
After the peaceful night’s rest serenaded by jungle sounds, guest awake to a steaming hot towel and a morning poem brought on a tray by a beau brummel waiter in a gingham bowtie. Breakfast is properly enjoyed from bedside tables and begins with café au lait poured from two copper pots on braziers. Yogurt parfait is followed by a main course which may be spinach eggs Florentine, a medley of croque monsieur, croque chocolat, and crème carmel, or a pairing of tarte Tartin with a lavished four layer Spanish omlette, drinks from the espresso bar, pure fruit juice and succulent fruit compote always follow
Truly over the top is the purifying white lulur bath extravaganza available in rooms with bathtub. Silver services are again carried in with white clay and yogurt the aroma of white waterlilies accompanies the massage which is followed by a bath in white flowers from gardenias to chempaka where a gorgeous tray service of menthe a l’eau and white chocolate fondue with white fruits of Bali is placed tubside. Later the royal prince or princess is carefully dried and massaged with whitening lotion then powdered with scented talc and tucked in for the night.
Rates are 25-60 US dollars plus 10% government tax per room per night including breakfast and teatime. To book one of the cottages see the website at www.matahariubud.com or call 975459. Currently the afternoon tea is being offered on a promotional basis to non room guests for 60,000 Rp.
