2. This is the famous old colonial Oranje Hotel, where the famous "flag incident" occured in 1946. A number of Dutch ex-internees raised the Dutch flag and sang the Dutch national anthem. This was not appreciated by Indonesian nationalists, who had already proclaimed the Indonesian republic. There is a memorial plaque right there. The hotel is still very much of the old colonial style, with a lot of original furnishings. It is very beautiful.

3. The "Raffles" equivalent for Surabaya. I will definately stay there again. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
